You can convert it of course, making downloads quicker & requiring less storage space, but to combat that Hollywood makes sure retail DVDs are marginal quality that look IMHO just nasty after conversion. Downloading a DVD is bad in that respect at often 6-7 GB in original format. Blu-ray is highest quality, because you can't squeeze the usually around 40 GB through the pipes for streaming, & it makes for a Long download, even on broadband, *If/when* you find it e.g. But streaming requires a good internet connection with plenty of bandwidth, which loads of people, including in the US, do not have.

Streaming may be the most convenient - buy a movie & it's often available via several streaming services on all sorts of devices - but it's often the most expensive, with movies costing more than most DVDs & many Blu-rays, at least initially when 1st released.

" It may be easier to pirate them via file sharing but millions do still buy them!"įWIW. " I am surprised anyone would pay a dime for a DVD burning program when there are so many free ones available."ĪFAIK there's one open source app, DVDAuthor, for Linux, & every free DVD authoring app uses that, adding their own GUI, conversions, templates etc. Before digital HD, when everyone used analog TVs, the majority of households in the US had the color settings misadjusted, often by quite a bit, and it bothered no one.

Yes, a DVD you buy today will look *IMHO* marginal on the 1080p TVs that make up the majority of TVs sold, though not as bad on the cheaper 720p sets, but to a huge number of people that does not matter. To maybe help explain that, DVDs are easier & cheaper to produce, and there are more ways to play DVDs than Blu-ray, most all of them cheaper. Today Best Buy's list for movies released this week shows 49 Blu-ray vs. "Are DVD videos (SD quality rather than HD) still widely used?"

Truth is this developer has no functional requirement that requires version 3 or 4 of FFMPEG and would operate just as well using FFMPEG v2.5 but really they should recompile it using the LGPLv3 license and include a copy of the LGPLv3 license text within the installation as well as attribute the FFMPEG open source project for making their product possible. I do have a FFMPEG.EXE statically linked version 4.1 that will run under Vista but it will not run under XP as whoever built it configured the PE headers to require NT 6.0 as minimum version of windows to load it under.

It will not function under earlier versions of windows and since this software relies so heavily of video format conversion to either Author or Rip DVD's as is it is functionally broken on earlier versions of windows.

AND they have used a version/build of FFMPEG that will NOT run under "Windows XP/ Vista/" or "Server 2003/ Server 2008" tool / tool.exe requires at a minimum of WIndows 7 or WIndows Server 2008 R2. They do not comply with the FFMPEG GPLv3 license which the program was licensed to them. *sighs* This developer is using a staticly linked FFMPEG.EXE renamed to "tool" that is renamed to "tool.exe" whenever the program needs to convert input or output video format to a differnt format.
